To Jane Goodall

CAROL GIGLIOTTI

Dear Jane,

I only met you once, in the early ’80s at a reception for an award you were receiving from the Animal Welfare Institute in Washington, DC. I was already committed to animal rights and was a visual artist whose work was about factory farming and vivisection. Now I write, and all my writing is about animals.

After the ceremony, people lined up to talk to you. I joined the line, wanting to tell you how important your work with and for animals was to me. When I finally reached you, you gave me all your attention. In fact, I was bowled over by your astonishing ability to listen to this person you did not know, and I came away with a desire to foster that same quiet focus in myself. I don’t remember what was said, but how I felt when talking to you was something I value to this day.

I have been a teacher for the last thirty years, and I have cultivated that listening ability you taught me in interactions with my students, with animals, and with human friends and family. I want to thank you for allowing me a glimpse into a very different way of being in the world. Your example has given me much joy and satisfaction and has taught me a fruitful path to compassion. It was a huge gift and I thank you for it.
